Presidents Day

The Annual Bowls Jersey Presidents Day match was held at the Sun Bowls Club on Friday 5th May. A men’s and ladies rink from each of the islands clubs turned out to compete in what is a battle of the sexes! The Club Presidents are specifically asked to select people who volunteer a lot of their time to the running of their clubs.

Holding a big advantage, the Men who before this encounter had won the trophy 24 times compared to the Ladies 4 were the early favourites.

At the half way stage, the Ladies were in control of the match and only a dogged fight back by the men could save their blushes – which to the relief of Bowls Jersey President Greg they did.

Congratulations to the highest winning rink, which for a 3rd year in a row has gone to a Ladies rink, and pictured below with President Greg Davis are the St Saviours quartet of Carol Le Goff, Marie Jacques, Ann Richardson and Ann Bisson.

A lot of fun was had by all, the first time the game had been played of an evening; it was all agreed the new time was much better but next year we will play in July where the weather and wind may be slightly warmer!

Phil Bichard

Bowls Jersey stalwart Phil Bichard, currently a member of the Sun Bowls Club but who plays a major and supportive role in the fabric of Island Bowls has unfortunately had a bleed on the brain and is currently in the UK receiving the appropriate care.

Bowls Jersey extend our very best wishes to Phil and hope he makes a speedy recovery, and as a bowls community stand by to offer Joan and Phil any assistance required once he is home.

Stick in Phil, and know we all want to see you back on the green shortly!

Indoor Bowls – Special General Meeting

All Bowls Jersey Members who are current members of the Jersey Indoor Bowling Association should have received notification of a Special General Meeting of the Club on Wednesday 19th April at 7pm.

It is an important meeting to shape the future of the Association and the Club, and the Bowls Jersey ask current members to attend to have their say, whether positive or negative, to support the endeavours of the current Indoor Committee and their pursuits.

Tri-Nations Test Series Teams Announced

Bowls Jersey has been invited to send a team to Guernsey this year to compete in a tri-nation tournament with Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

The Islands respective selection committees have selected:

Tracey O’Connor (JBC), Sheila McGinnigle (JBC), Margaret Breen (St. Saviours), Cathy Le Sueur (Sun Bowls) and Fiona Archibald (JBC) as the Ladies Team.

Thomas Greechan (St. Brelades), Derek Boswell (JBC), Scott Ruderham (Sun Bowls), Gus Hodgetts (JBC) and Jamie Macdonald (JBC) as the Mens Team.

The travelling manager will be Chris Andrews.

Bowls Jersey wish Bowls Guernsey every success in hosting the series, and obviously wish the very best to all of our players!

Jersey to host 2017 Touchstone European Championships

In early 2016, Bowls Jersey was approached to find out whether the Island would be able to assist the European Bowls Union with hosting  the 2017 “Friendly” Championships.

Bowls Jersey have long harboured ambitions of hosting an International Tournament in the Island, and this opportunity provided us with the perfect chance. Partnering with the support of Touchstone, a Jersey based provider of world leading software solutions for the Fiduciary Sector, we are delighted to be receiving news that in principle, all 16 member countries of the EBU have accepted the invitation to attend.

Key Facts

  • The Championships will be staged at Les Creux Bowls Club between Sunday 24th September and Friday 29th September. The Tournament is divided into 3 disciplines – Men’s Pairs, Ladies Pairs and Mixed Fours. Teams play in 2 groups of round robin play before advancing to the Finals.
  • Players and Officials will be accommodated at the Merton Hotel, in conjunction with Bowls Jersey’s Travel Sponsor; the Seymour Hotel Group. Preferential rates are available and you are advised to book through the European Bowls Union to get the rooms required.
  • Umpires from the UK will be officiating at the event.
  • Travel between the Accomodation and Les Creux Bowls Club will be provided daily for all Players and Officials.

Ladies win Gold in Cyprus

IMG_0180Bowls Jersey has recently sent a Men’s and Ladies team to the sunny shores of Cyprus to compete in a test series.

The teams went to battle with their counterparts from Cyprus, Isle of Man and Israel – and the ladies team of Liz Simon, Eileen Vowden, Christine Grimes, Doreen Moon and Joan Renouf finished top of the pile!

The Men’s team of Kevin Le Long, Didier Le Fahler, Alec Stewart, Jim Douglas and Rob Clive did not enjoy the same success on the green; but old friendships were renewed and new ones made.

Bowls Jersey thank Bowls Cyprus for their invitation to the event, and hope we can support it for more years to come.

Lastly, Bowls Jerseys thanks to Jean Holmes and Chris Andrews who travelled with the teams as their respective Managers.
